You don’t have to be a procrastinator to put off making your own funeral arrangements — the truth is, it’s not something at the top of anyone’s to-do list! However, preplanning your funeral is smart, considerate to those you love, and a great way to reduce stress, as well as inevitable costs. Even still, we know it’s not easy to muster up the motivation to get it done, so here are some helpful tips to move preplanning your funeral to the top of your to-do’s:

Set a goal and the steps it will take to reach it. For instance, say you want to have your plan in place by the end of the year. Break up the year into mini goals or steps you need to take in order to achieve your main goal. Maybe one month it’s researching your options, then another making decisions, like what you’ll wear, what flowers you want, or what music. The next month might be talking to the people you want involved, and finally, making an appointment to officially put your plan in place. By making smaller goals to achieve along the way, funeral arrangements won’t seem so overwhelming, and with each accomplishment, you’ll be less likely to get frustrated and more likely to stay on track, reaching your main goal faster.

Get support from your family. When you surround yourself with others willing to help and encourage you, it’s amazing what you can accomplish! Of course, your family will likely feel uncomfortable about discussing your death, but once they realize how important it is to you to plan ahead and how helpful it will be in the long run, they’ll be happy to be there for you and offer support in any way they can — and that will not only help you stay motivated, but if you delegate some things, will also help you get it done!

Think positively. No one wants to think about death, but if you stay focused on all the positive things that come out of making funeral arrangements ahead of time, you’ll be able to maintain your motivation throughout the process. Remind yourself of all the reasons you’re preplanning in the first place: it’s a cost savings, it provides peace of mind, and it eliminates guesswork and having to make difficult decision during a time of grief. You won’t have to worry about leaving your loved ones with a burden, and your family won’t have to worry about dealing with all the details and planning on their own. If you start losing your motivation, just think about the weight you’ll be lifting off yourself, as well as your family. And remember, it’s not about dying, but living happily without worry.
